Employment Legislation
Early legislation in the 1970’s attempted to prevent unfair dismissal and discrimination on the grounds of race and gender. The categories of persons entitled to protection have increased to include part-time workers. There is a considerable body of legislation, however it is marked by several inconsistencies particularly with the differing periods of service required to qualify.
Some statutory rights are only available to employees who have worked in a particular organisation for a specific period of continuous employment (qualifying period) and have contracts of service. There are now over 40 pieces of employment legislation on the statute books. Every year sees a modification of existing laws through the development of cases, and the introduction of new rules, all of which must be followed.
