Researchers to study extent of bullying amongst Nurses and Midwives in Ireland
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) have teamed up with NUI Galway and National College of Ireland to study the effects of bullying amongst their members.
Professor Maura Sheehan of NUI Galway conducting the survey, said that there are very disturbing levels of bullying amongst nurses and midwives. "As researchers, it became clear that we need to conduct a survey of nurses and midwives to establish the extent of this problem and, most importantly, to formulate recommendations on how bullying at work can be reduced and the types of support that victims and witnesses need." The survey has come as a result of an upsurge in investigations, currently 25-30 cases at a time.
Phil Ní Sheaghdha, INMO Director of Industrial Relations said that “it is unfortunate that INMO members are still reporting high levels of allegations of bullying in the workplace” he continued “We are good at investigating allegations of bullying within the HSE, but we are not so good at preventing it and that is what we hope to focus on with the survey”.
